Farmers Market or Mercado dos Lavradores, in Portuguese, is a market in the centre of Funchal, where you can buy flowers, fruit, fish, vegetables, shoes, souvenirs and all sorts of things.
It was opened in 1940, to be a central point for the Madeirans to sell and buy their locally produced goods and still is.
In the main entrance you meet women in traditional clothing selling flowers grown in Madeira. You can taste all kind of exotic fruits and vegetables and buy if you like. Everything is very nice displayed.
We usually go there to see if there are some new Bougainvillea or Orchid to bring home. It´s ok to bring flowers home to Sweden these days, no need of any permit or passport for the flowers, since we are within the EU.
The fish market is a very interesting part of the market. It´s really spectacular with all the fishes, both beautiful and some a bit nasty looking :-). Don´t miss it.
On the walls in both markets are beautiful handmade mosaic tiles. Just they are worth-while.
