Pico do Arieiro is the third highest top in Madeira, 1818 moa. The two others are Pico de Ruivo 1862 moa and Pico das Torres 1851 moa.
You can go by car all the way up to Pico do Arieiro and park outside the top cabin where you will find a diner, souvenir shop and an exhibition of mountain climbing, skiing and flora/fauna in the mountains.
The weather up here is very dodgy, it changes quickly from fair to bad in a short time. We have, unfortunately not, been lucky enough in our attempts of hiking but sometimes the clouds raises and you can see the breath taking views all over.
There are two really exciting hikes from Pico do Arieiro to Pico de Ruivo, one of 5,6 kilometres and one of 7 kilometres. The trail runs upon or on the mountain sides and are a bit narrow at times and very steep so you rather not have problems with vertigo. Otherwise it´s just to follow the signs. Don´t forget to bring warm/rain proof clothing and food/drinks.
